A roving is a fiber bundle that is long and narrow. While spinning yarn from wool, fleece, or other fibers, rovings are created. Although they are mostly utilized as fiber ready for spinning, they can also be used for other textile arts like specialized knitting.
The fibers are arranged in smooth bundles that are generally parallel after carding and combing. These are pulled out, either manually or mechanically, and then gently twisted to create lengths that can be spun. The rovings are these fiber strands that aren't spun. The term "roving" can also refer to rolling these strands, to strands in general, or to the act of rolling.
