Woolen Yarn: Timeless Warmth and Durability

A form of yarn manufactured from carded wool is called woolen (American English) or woollen (Commonwealth English). Woolen yarn has a lot of air in it and is soft, light, and elastic. As a result, it works well as an insulator and as knitting yarn. Unlike worsted yarn, which is carded and produces a soft, pliable yarn, woolen yarn has its fibers combed to lie parallel.

Wool (and other comparable animal fibers, cashmere, camel, etc.) must be cleaned prior to mechanical processing for both the worsted and woolen processes. Although it is now customary to include fiber mixes under the names "woolen" and "worsted," these designations are limited to the textile processing of animal fibers.
